# India Defence: stories and analysis

Long reads on Indian defence, told as stories. Key facts come from official sources; every story lists its sources.

- [India built its own GPS, then its clocks began to die. Can NVS-03 bring NavIC back?](https://allindia.news/defence/navic-nvs-03-gslv-f18-four-satellites-restored/index.md): Your phone's blue dot, a fishing boat's route and a train's live location all depend on satellites. India built its own set so it would not have to rely on anyone else's. Then the clocks inside them failed, one launch went wrong, and the system fell below the minimum. On 30 October a rocket lifted off to fix it. (2 November 2026)
- [Four defence ministers in two days in Cebu. What did India actually come home with?](https://allindia.news/defence/admm-plus-cebu-india-defence-diplomacy-october-2026/index.md): Countries rarely fight alone, so who you train and build with matters. In late October the Defence Minister met his US, Japanese, Singaporean and South Korean counterparts in Cebu, the Philippines. Most of it was talk. One track, with Japan, could fill a real gap at sea. (2 November 2026)
- [Ten exercises on three continents in one month: what India's forces were rehearsing for](https://allindia.news/defence/india-military-exercises-october-2026-tarang-shakti-bimstec/index.md): In a crisis, ships and aircraft from different countries may have to share radio channels, refuel each other or hunt the same submarine. If they have never practised it, they fumble. In October Indian forces rehearsed with partners from Plymouth to Vladivostok, and the month ended with two firsts. (2 November 2026)
- [Why India's submarines have to come up for air, and the home grown machine meant to keep them hidden](https://allindia.news/defence/indigenous-aip-submarines-setting-to-work-phase-2/index.md): A submarine is only safe while nobody knows where it is. India's Kalvari-class boats must come close to the surface to recharge, and that is when they are easiest to find. On 24 October an Indian made system that lets them stay under longer reached its next test stage. Here is the problem, the long chain still ahead, and what to watch. (2 November 2026)
- [The Army has a new rulebook for war. The public cannot read it. Here is what we know](https://allindia.news/defence/army-land-warfare-doctrine-2026-what-we-know/index.md): A doctrine decides what kind of war an army expects, and so what it trains for and what the country buys. On 23 October the Defence Minister released the Army's new Land Warfare Doctrine. The document has not been published. What the official record says, what is only reported, and the clues hidden in a speech. (2 November 2026)
- [India makes more of its own weapons than ever. So what does it still have to buy from abroad?](https://allindia.news/defence/aatmanirbharta-2-0-defence-self-reliance-numbers/index.md): A weapon is only as available as its hardest part to get. India's defence production hit a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore in 2025-26, yet on 26 October the Defence Minister listed what the country still cannot make on its own. Engines show why the last mile is the hardest. (2 November 2026)
- [Rs 2.12 lakh crore approved, six of ten Army items aimed at the sky. Why none of it is bought yet](https://allindia.news/defence/dac-rs-2-12-lakh-crore-drones-helicopters-air-defence/index.md): Wars are increasingly fought with drones, small flying machines that can watch or strike. On 26 October India's top defence buying committee cleared a list where six of ten Army items fly or exist to stop things that fly. What changed, what an approval really is, and why one satellite took five years from yes to signature. (2 November 2026)
- [A test pilot takes over an Air Force that must rebuild its strength. Inside his four letter plan](https://allindia.news/defence/air-chief-marshal-ashutosh-dixit-vayu-vision/index.md): On 1 November the Air Force's 29th chief set out his vision in four letters, and the first one contains an admission: combat strength has to be restored to the level the government approved. Who he is, why that word matters, and what VAYU asks for. (2 November 2026)
- [A warship can only stay out as long as its fuel lasts. Why India's first home built fleet tanker matters](https://allindia.news/defence/fleet-support-ship-surya-launched-visakhapatnam/index.md): Warships run out of fuel, water and stores long before they run out of work, and then they have to head home. On 6 October the first of five giant Indian built support ships entered the water at Visakhapatnam. The problem it solves, why the shipyard had to grow to build it, and what is left before it sails. (2 November 2026)
- [The small hunters India ordered to guard its ports are years late. INS Mangrol is the third to arrive](https://allindia.news/defence/ins-mangrol-anti-submarine-shallow-water-craft/index.md): Big warships struggle in the shallow, crowded water near ports, and that is where a hostile submarine can threaten them. In 2019 India ordered 16 small hunters for the job, with deliveries due from 2022. On 12 October the third from Cochin joined the Navy. Here is the danger, the delay and what is still missing. (2 November 2026)
- [Five years from yes to signature: the satellite and the torpedo India just bought for Rs 4,106 crore](https://allindia.news/defence/gsat-7c-varunastra-contracts-rs-4106-crore/index.md): Military radios stop at the next mountain, and modern submarines are quiet and hard to catch. On 15 October the Defence Ministry signed for a satellite to carry the Air Force's messages past the mountains and for more torpedoes to hunt submarines. One was approved in 2021. The other first arrived in 2016. (2 November 2026)
- [An airship at 21 km and a jump over Ladakh: what DRDO's two tests prove, and what they don't yet](https://allindia.news/defence/drdo-stratospheric-airship-high-altitude-parachute-tests/index.md): Aircraft that watch a border must land to refuel, and troops dropped into the Himalayas face thin air that makes parachutes violent. On 6 October one DRDO lab reported answers to both: an airship that climbed to 21 km, and the first live jump with a new high altitude parachute. (2 November 2026)
- [India, long a big arms buyer, sold a record Rs 38,424 crore abroad. The surprise is who sold it](https://allindia.news/defence/india-defence-exports-rs-38424-crore-push-for-partners/index.md): For decades India was known as a major importer of weapons. In 2025-26 it exported a record Rs 38,424 crore of defence equipment to more than 80 countries. Inside the number is a twist about who did the selling, a target that needs about 30% more, and a new pitch to partners. (2 November 2026)
